Our School
HCS Early College High School is a small, personalized learning environment with up to 400 students that blends high school and college into a coherent educational program. Early College High School was founded in 2006 on the Conway campus of Horry Georgetown Technical College and moved into its own building in 2013.
The program is designed so that students may earn up to two years of college credit at the same time as they are earning a high school diploma (within four to five years of entering 9th grade).
An AVID high school, students are supported through an elective course where students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college academic coaching, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.
Early College is designed to
-
encourage student groups who are underrepresented in post-secondary education – students of color, ELL learners, students from low-income families, first generation of family to attend college.
-
serve highly-capable students, who score in the middle quartiles on test performance (PACT/PASS, MAP, EXPLORE).
-
remove the barriers to post-secondary education by providing students with academic preparation to meet college readiness standards, extra help in the form of counseling, academic coaching, mentoring, service learning, family engagement, and field experiences.
